Adam-12 Premier Episode Log 1 - The Impossible Mission
His last night as a police officer has Pete Malloy is riding rookie Jim Reed for the night. Reed’s greenness shines through during several awkward moments at the beginning of their shift together. Their first call is a dispute between two men and a woman has erupted in the middle of a street. Next, they are called out next to a liquor store robbery which leads to an action packed chase of the two robbery suspects down Tujunga Wash. Their next call involves a baby who suffocated on a plastic dry cleaning bag. Malloy begins CPR on the infant while waiting for the ambulance to arrive. The officers' last call has them dispatched to park where shots have been fired. Sgt. MacDonald sends Malloy and Reed to the south side of the part to contain the gang. Malloy orders Reed to go to the next tree and hold his position. Reed has other ideas and ignores Malloy’s orders to hold and keeps moving until he is out of Malloy’s line of vision. Several shots are fired before everything goes silent. Reed tells Malloy to hold his fire as he walks three gang members with hands on their heads towards him. Malloy is furious with Reed as he orders him to wait for him while he goes to talk to Lt. Moore who has now arrived at the scene. Lt Moore reminds Malloy of a youngster he once rode with. Character and Show Facts: Pete’s been on the job seven years, senior man on the watch. He is unmarried and once partnered with Lt. Moore as a rookie. Three weeks prior, he saw his partner get 'blown up. His partner left behind a wife that was six month old baby. It was mentioned earlier in the episode that the event was at a warehouse.
Jim has been married three years. 23-year-old probationer. Finished in the top 10 of his class.
Art Gilmore is credited as Lt. Val Wangsgard in the episode credits, but in future episodes is listed as Lt. Val Moore.
Officer Pete Malloy's Speech to Rookie Jim Reed
Within the first few minutes of this episode, Pete gives Jim the rundown on the patrol car. Lots of interesting facts about the vehicle are mentioned in that scene. Here is Pete Malloy's dialog:
"This black and white patrol car has an overhead valve V-eight engine. It develops 325 horsepower at 4800 RPMs. It accelerates from 0-60 in seven seconds. It has a top speed of 120 miles an hour.
It’s equipped with a multi-channel DFE radio, an electronic siren capable of emitting three variables: wail, yelp, and alert. It also serves as an outside radio speaker and a public address system.
This automobile has two shotgun racks, one attached to the bottom portion of the front seat, one in the vehicle trunk.
Attached to the middle of the dash, illuminated by a single bulb, is a hot-sheet desk, fastened to which you will always make sure is the latest one off the teletype before you ever roll. It’s your life insurance. And mine. You take care of it, it’ll take care of you."
